Who will lead the world in innovative cars reducing oil dependency?
By Todd Whittemore
Toyota plans to launch an urban commuter Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) by 2012. Of course, this is strictly a small commuter vehicle that seats 4 people within the city dwelling of 50 mile trips. Toyota's Vice president responsible for Environmental and Public Affairs, Irv Miller, announced on January 10 that "Nowhere is this more important than with our industry's duty and commitment to provide true sustainable mobility with vehicles that significantly reduce fuel consumption, our carbon footprint and overall greenhouse gases." Last year, toyota announce that it will roll out a large number of Plug-in Hybrid vehicles (PHV) to global lease customers fleet by 2010. The first generation PHV, in a Toyota Prius, will roll out at the end of this year, 2009, with a Lithium ion battery. Within the global lease fleet of 500 that will be this first generation of PHV, 100 will be introduced within the U.S. lease fleet. This fleet will be there first step in analyzing the effectiveness and the plan of reducing fuel consumption and reducing the carbon footprint. See article at Toyota PHV announcement. Once again Toyota is leading the auto industry and the world with innovation. These are the type of R&D and developement that Chrysler, Chevrolet, Ford, General Motors should have been doing years ago to stay ahead of Toyota, Honda, etc. Instead of being in position for a Bail out money from the government that may not work. At this time it is the strongest that will provide vehicles that reduce carbon footprint and more importantly reduce and eliminate the world's dependency of fossil fuels.
