Think Safety during the winter.

By Todd Whittemore

A cold weather snap in the late October and early November months means that many across Northern America are turning off the AC and turning on the furnace. But with a struggling economy and continuiong efforts on saving on gas and oil products, many are finding other alternative heating methods to keep warm and save on money.

A lot of people are flocking to Home Depot or Lowes to buy electrical heaters to save usage on the furnace. Dura flame logs and weather stripping are also a good way to put more money back in your wallet. The weather stripping will plug up cracks and keep your house more insulated.

Here are some safety tips that everyone should remember as we move into the winter months and yet saving on gas and money:

1. If you use a space heater, keep anything even remotely flammable at least three feet away.

2. Don't pile flammable items like clothes, papers or bedding on top of space heaters or air registers.

3. Turn heaters off before you go to bed.

4. If you use gas appliances, have a working carbon monoxide alarm in your home.

5. Have chimneys inspected before using fireplaces or heat stoves.

6. Use only laboratory approved portable heaters.

7. Bottom line, use alternative heating appliances properly or not at all.

8. Make sure smoke alarms are in good working order, just in case something happens.

BE safe, warm and save money this year during the winter!
