20 Energy saving tips for your home!

By Todd Whittemore

Here are a few more energy saving tips for your home to keep in mind that will our planet be more green and save you money.

1. To keep the air moving and the space dry in the crawl spaces, open the vents as much as you can.

2. Use a fan to spread the cool air from the air conditioner more effectively around the home.

3. Always wash full loads of clothes in the washing machine or if obsolutely necessary to do smaller loads, adjust the water level.

4. The pipes from the water heater should be insulated as tight as possible.

5. Buy and install a thermostat that can be progammable to constantly adjust or use different setting based on the time of the day to save on energy.

6. Keep the water heater insulated by wrapping it with a water heater blanket.

7. Keep the water heater temperature to the optimal temperature between 120°F - 125°F.

8. Take quicker showers instead of baths and the water doesn't have to be hot.

9. Use an automatic clothes-drying cycle instead of a timed cycle. Put in the next load quickly to make use of leftover heat.

10. Fill a dish pan full of water instead of running water constantly while cleaning the dishes.

11. When considering the layout of your kitchen, don’t place the refrigerator near an oven or other heat source so it will run more efficiently.

12. Take it easy on the road. Aggressive driving wastes gasoline.

13. Like to fall asleep with the TV on? Put the TV on a sleep timer to save energy when you’re no longer awake.

14. Keep the oven door closed while cooking your meals. Each time you open the oven door, it drops the temperature 25 degrees, requiring more energy to cook your meal.

15. Get a bucket to collect rain water that you can later use to water your plants.

16. Before you open the refrigerator or freezer door, decide what you want to eat so you’re not letting cold air escape.

17. Remove your AC window unit at the end of each season to prevent heating loss during the winter months.

18. Keep your range burners clean (and the reflectors) as clean burners utilize energy more efficiently.

19. Consider having a professional energy audit performed on your home or business.

20. Turn off lights when you leave a room.
